Mike Brey, who has won 300 games in 14 seasons at Notre Dame, is on the shortlist of coaching candidates with whom Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour would like to speak, according to a report in the South Bend Tribune.

Brey, 55, is coming off a 15-17 season, including 6-12 in Notre Dame's inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He won coach of the year honors three times in the Big East.

The newspaper cited a source familiar with the Cal search and noted that Barbour worked as an associate athletic director at Notre Dame from 2002-04 while Brey was basketball coach.

After the 2012 season, Brey signed a 10-year contract extension with Notre Dame that runs through the 2021-22 season.

NIT: Austin Hollins hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 46.1 seconds left, and Minnesota (25-13) won the NIT championship for the third time, beating Larry Brown and SMU 65-63.

The Mustangs finished 27-10.

With Gophers coach Richard Pitino's famous father, Rick, sitting near his son's bench at Madison Square Garden, Minnesota made up for a blowout loss to Stanford in the NIT final two years ago.

AP awards: Doug McDermott was a near-unanimous selection as The Associated Press' player of the year. He led the nation in scoring with a 26.7 average and received 64 votes from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Russ Smith of Louisville got the other vote.

Gregg Marshall, whose Wichita State team was the first to reach the NCAA tournament undefeated since UNLV in 1991, was selected coach of the year.

North Carolina: Forward James Michael McAdoo announced he will forgo his senior season and enter the NBA draft.
