The women's event for the 2014 Amgen Tour of California features some of the world's best cyclists, organizers announced Wednesday.
The field includes U.S. champion Evelyn Stevens of Team Specialized-lululemon, who won the tour's individual time trial last year. Other top competitors are UnitedHealthcare's Alison Powers and Mara Abbott, twice the winner of the Giro d'Italia Femminile, world champion Amber Neben of FCS|Zngine, Tina Pic of DNA Cycling and Robin Farina of Spy Giant Ride.
Tour organizers expanded the women's racing to a second day this year by adding a 1.25-mile circuit course Sunday around the State Capitol in Sacramento. The field of 115 riders will begin after the eight-day tour opens Sunday with a 120-mile Stage 1 for the men.
Then 20 women also will compete Monday in Folsom on the same 12.6-mile individual time trial course as the men.
"We are committed to advancing women's cycling in the U.S. and providing a powerful platform, and there is no better way to do that than showcasing so many talented athletes in two different yet equally exciting race days," race director Kristin Bachochin said in a statement.
Bay Area-based Team Tibco is one of the 20 teams entered in the circuit race.
