Paul Casey was scuffling midway through his second round at the Byron Nelson Championship, hoping he could do enough just to make the cut.
After a record back nine, Casey was near the top of a crowded leader board. He was in a group of eight players at 6-under 134, two shots behind leader Brendon Todd in Irving, Texas.
Casey was over par Friday before matching the PGA Tour record for the best score on a back nine, an 8-under 27 with six birdies and an eagle. That was part of his 7-under 63 that was the low round of the day, although he could never remember such a good nine.
"On par-3 courses, I think," Casey said.
Todd ended his round with back-to-back birdies to wrap up a round of 64 in which he needed only 22 putts.
Also at 6 under were Martin Kaymer (67), Mike Weir (66), Graham DeLaet (66), Morgan Hoffmann (66), Tim Herron (66), Charles Howell III (66) and Marc Leishman (68).
Peter Hanson was leading after a first-round 65 at TPC Four Seasons but was eight shots worse Friday and fell to 2 under.
David Duval, only a stroke off the lead after an opening 66, shot a 76 and missed the cut by a stroke at 2-over 142.
LPGA: Hee Young Park topped the leader board at 8 under in the suspended second round of the Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia. The South Korean shot a 3-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Stacy Lewis (65), Brittany Lang (68), Lexi Thompson, Azahara Munoz and Lizette Salas. Thompson and Munoz had five holes left in the second round, and Salas had seven.
Champions: Mark Calcavecchia made an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole to take a one-shot lead over Jay Haas after the second round of the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Alabama. Calcavecchia shot his second straight 3-under 69 to reach 6 under, while Haas had a 70 at the tour's first of five majors in 2014.
USGA: Michael Campbell, who won the U.S. Open in 2005, the last time it was held at Pinehurst No. 2, has withdrawn from the June 12-15 event in North Carolina. He wrote on his website that he has had problems with a tendon in his ankle.
