What: U.S. stars Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin are among the big names at the 47th Santa Clara meet, the sixth and final Grand Prix before the U.S. championships Aug. 6-10 in Irvine. Phelps is entered in four events, Franklin six.

Friday highlights: Phelps, winner of a record 18 Olympic medals, won't be favored in the 100-meter freestyle with a field including U.S. record holder Nathan Adrian of Berkeley. French star Yannick Angel, who trains with Phelps in North Baltimore, also is entered with Olympic gold medalists Anthony Ervin of Berkeley and Matt Grevers of Tucson. The women's 100 freestyle includes Franklin, Coughlin, Georgia stars Megan Romano and Shannon Vreeland and North Baltimore's Allison Schmitt. Also, the men's 100 butterfly includes Phelps and local stars Tom Shields of Cal and Eugene Godsoe and Jason Dunford of Stanford.

Saturday highlights: Olympians Elizabeth Beisel and Caitlin Leverenz (Cal) and Celina Li of Pleasanton highlight the women's 400 individual medley. Stanford star Maya DiRado would have made it a more competitive race but is sick. In the 200 backstroke, Franklin will face Beisel and Cal teammate Elizabeth Pelton. The men's 50 freestyle features Olympians Bruno Fratus of Brazil, Adrian, Ervin and Grevers.

Sunday highlight: The women's 100 backstroke is a Cal showdown with Rachel Bootsma going against teammates Franklin and Pelton, as well as Georgia's Olivia Smoliga and Romano.
