The lure of the 49ers' new digs is bringing international soccer to the South Bay.

The Mexican national team will face Chile on Sept. 6 in the first-ever international game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, signaling a new era for local soccer fans.

With the Earthquakes new 18,000-seat stadium opening next year in San Jose, the Bay Area has increased its options for playing host to such friendly games, including the U.S. men's and women's national teams.

The Earthquakes open 68,000-seat Levi's on Saturday in a Major League Soccer game against Seattle Sounders FC.

Mexico is playing two games in the United States during the FIFA window for international matches -- the first games since the end of the World Cup earlier this month, the Mexican federation announced Tuesday. El Tricolor plays Bolivia on Sept. 9 in Colorado.

Mexico and Chile had impressive showings in Brazil, both reaching the round of 16 before being eliminated. Mexico fell to the Netherlands in the knockout stage on a controversial call in the second minute of injury time. Dutch star Arjen Robben was awarded a penalty when he tripped over Mexican captain Rafael Marquez, helping Holland to a 2-1 victory.

    San Ramon's Canyon Creek fell to the Southeast team (Barboursville, West Virginia) 12-2 in its first game at the Intermediate World Series being played at Livermore's Max Baer Park. Canyon Creek plays its losers' bracket game Thursday at 7 p.m. against the loser of Wednesday's East (Berlin, Maryland) vs. Southwest (Midland, Texas) game.

    San Jose Giants

    The Giants took a 3-0 lead after four innings, then held on to beat the host Modesto Nuts 3-2. Starting pitcher Pat Young improved to 9-3, pitching seven innings and allowing one earned run.
