The U.S. men's national team trimmed its roster to 16 players Tuesday by cutting Washington's John Wall and Bradley Beal and Atlanta's Paul Millsap.

The Americans are off this week after training last week in Las Vegas, where Indiana All-Star Paul George was lost to a broken right leg. They will resume practice for the World Cup of Basketball on Aug. 14 in Chicago.

Players remaining who hope to make the final 12-man roster for Spain are Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, Chicago's Derrick Rose, Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, New Orleans' Anthony Davis, Golden State's Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Houston's James Harden, Atlanta's Kyle Korver, Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins, Dallas' Chandler Parsons, Utah's Gordon Hayward, Toronto's DeMar DeRozan, Portland's Damian Lillard, Denver's Kenneth Faried, Detroit's Andre Drummond and Brooklyn's Mason Plumlee. The Americans planned to make cuts Saturday but put that off after George's injury.

    Former champion David Toms has withdrawn from the PGA Championship because of a back injury. He was replaced in the field by Shawn Stefani.

  • Bethany Wu shot a 2-under 68 in the U.S. Women's Amateur in Glen Cove, New York, to top the 64 match-play qualifiers. The 17-year-old Wu, from Diamond Bar finished stroke play at 3-under 137 at Nassau Country Club. Alameda's Grace Na and Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse both ended two days of stroke play tied for eighth at 1-over 141. Los Altos' Lauren Kim (tied for 21st) also advanced to match play after a 144. Audra Kepler (Pleasant Hill), Jayshree Sarathy (Palo Alto) and Jordan Lippetz (Oakland) failed to advance.

    Tight end Martellus Bennett has been suspended indefinitely by the Bears after an altercation in practice. Monday, Bennett was taken to the ground with a grab to the shoulder by rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller. The play occurred during a full-pad scrimmage when players are not supposed to be taken to the ground. Bennett responded by getting up, grabbing the first-round draft pick and slamming him to the ground.

    Real Salt Lake and U.S. World Cup team midfielder Kyle Beckerman has pulled out of the MLS All-Star game because of an unspecified injury. He was replaced with Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell for Wednesday night's match against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at Providence Park.

    NHL

    Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been hospitalized in Finland because of blood clots in his lower right leg and in both lungs. Timonen's return to the ice is uncertain.
