The majors are over. Rory McIlroy still has work to do.

Coming off back-to-back majors, McIlroy says he wants to finish the PGA Tour season off strong. That means extending his amazing run over the next four weeks in the FedEx Cup playoffs, which start Thursday at The Barclays in Paramus, New Jersey.

McIlroy is coming off three straight victories, and they were big ones -- the British Open, a World Golf Championship event and the PGA Championship. At stake over the next month is a $10 million prize for winning the FedEx Cup.

"I want to finish the season well. I want to be up there in contention week in and week out," he said Wednesday. "I feel like the season I had deserves a finish like that. So I'm going to just grind it out every week until I get a bit of a break after the Ryder Cup."

  • Phil Mickelson has set his sights on the 2016 Olympics even before this year's tour season ends. "I don't know why that's important to me, but it is," Mickelson said at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus. "I want to be a 46-year-old Olympian, that's pretty cool." The 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro will feature golf for the first time in 112 years with the world's top 15 men and women automatically qualifying based on their world ranking systems. Only four men per country can qualify from inside the Official World Golf Ranking's top 15. Mickelson is currently No. 10 and the fourth-ranked American behind Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson. After next month's Ryder Cup, Mickelson said he plans to take the rest of the season off to focus on improving his health and play.

"Work on my fitness, work on my golf game and really focus on 2015," he said. That's "when the points start accumulating really for the Olympics."

  • Brooks Koepka has committed to play in the Frys.com Open at Silverado Resort on Oct. 9-12, tournament officials said. Currently ranked 72nd in the world, Koepka received a sponsor exemption to the 2013 Frys.com Open. He tied for third behind champion Jimmy Walker and runner-up Vijay Singh at CordeValle in San Martin. Walker and Singh are also returning to the Frys.com Open, which will open the 2014-15 tour season for the second year in a row.
