Catcher Brett Cumberland went 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead Cal (18-6, 7-2 Pac-12) to a 5-3 win over UCLA (12-13, 4-5 Pac-12) on Sunday, completing a sweep of the Bruins at Evans Diamond. The Bears have won seven straight. Left-hander Matt Ladrech improved to 3-1 in going 62/3 innings. Alex Dunlap and Brandon Wulff combined for seven RBIs and Brett Hanewich went seven innings without allowing an earned run as host Stanford (14-8, 4-2 Pac-12) beat USC (12-14, 3-3) 8-1. Reliever Chris Viall closed out the win with two scoreless innings. Host Santa Clara (12-14, 2-4 WCC) avoided a sweep by visiting Saint Mary's by beating the Gaels (15-10, 6-3) 13-9. The Broncos' Kyle Cortopassi had three hits and four RBIs. The Gaels' Anthony Gonsolin went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. San Jose State (10-17) hung on to beat host Cal Poly (17-9) 9-7 for its first series victory of the season. Corey Olivet tripled to drive in two runs in the eighth to give the Spartans a three-run cushion.
Host Cal (15-14-1, 3-4-1 Pac-12) yielded 11 hits to Arizona State and fell to the Sun Devils (27-10, 3-3) 9-1. The Bears scored their lone run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Taurie Pogue. Making up a postponed series from last week, San Jose State (15-18, 4-1 Mountain West) split a doubleheader, losing 9-3 before taking a 13-5, six-inning win against host Colorado State (16-15, 2-3). Stanford (12-17, 0-6 Pac-12) rallied to tie it at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Oregon State (24-9-1, 4-5) scored in its half of the 10th and took the 3-2 victory. The Cardinal's Jessica Plaza's two-out RBI triple in the seventh nearly cleared the right-field wall.
Maegan Manasse defeated Stanford's Carol Zhao 7-5, 6-4 to clinch No. 2 Cal's (17-0) eventual 4-3 home win over the No. 18 Cardinal (10-5).
The Stanford lightweight rowing varsity eight won its sixth straight title at the San Diego Crew Classic, taking home the A.W. Coggeshall Cup.
