Family-owned and operated since 1925, Guglielmo Winery offers wines at nearly every price point, from jugs to magnums, with friendly, unpretentious service in a relaxed atmosphere.

A burbling fountain provides the perfect backdrop for a lazy afternoon in the beautiful courtyard, enjoying a glass of estate zinfandel or petit sirah and gourmet cheeses and salami from the well-stocked larder, while watching hawks arc slowly over gnarly head-trained vines.

Winemaker Alan DeWitt crafts award-winning Italian varietals like sangiovese, barbera, charbono and pinot grigio, along with chardonnay, pinot noir, syrah, carignane, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Guglielmo (goo-yell-mo) recently planted an Italian varietal called sagrantino, reviving an ancient tradition.

Need to do some holiday shopping? You're in luck, as Guglielmo's already impressive gift shop triples in size for the season, with everything you need to make the holidays merrier, from wine-themed ornaments and festive lights to glassware and gaily packaged international foods and gift baskets. The holiday fair is Dec. 15, and the gift shop is open through Christmas Eve.

The sips: The 2009 Carignane ($20) is earthy and unique, a fine alternative to pinot, and the juicy 2010 Barbera ($25), is a well-crafted must. If you love petit sirah, the 2010 ink-black Estate Petit Sirah ($25) will become your new squeeze. Not too many wineries make charbono, and the 2009 is vibrant with red fruits and fennel ($20).
