Clay Aiken for Congress? Don't laugh -- the "American Idol" runner-up appears to be serious.

The Washington Blade reports that Aiken has made calls assessing his chances of running for the seat held by Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers in North Carolina's 2nd District. Aiken has contacted a Democratic political consultant and pollsters, the Blade reports.

Ellmers narrowly beat Democrat Bob Etheridge in 2010.

Aiken has no political experience but is an outspoken advocate on gay and lesbian issues. His musical career has included a 2003 appearance on "American Idol," recordings and time on Broadway.
