Dee Dee Penny of Dum Dum Girls
Meet one of our favorite artists from the 2014 South by Southwest music conference and festival in Austin, Texas.
SXSW Spotlight Artist Name: Dum Dum Girls City: Los Angeles Website: http://wearedumdumgirls.com Local shows: 8 p.m. April 8; The Independent, S.F.; $16-$18, www.ticketfly.com. Also: 8 p.m. April 9; The Blank Club, San Jose; $13-$15, www.ticketweb.com. Key cuts: "Cult of Love," "Coming Down"
The skinny: If Siouxsie Sioux had worked with Phil Spector, it's plausible that the result would have sounded something like the Dum Dum Girls. The music is a mixture of '60s girl group and '80s goth, resulting in something that feels oh-so 21st century. The group is led by Dee Dee Penny (aka Kristin Welchez), a stylish singer-songwriter who clearly knows how to get the most out of a lo-fi, indie-pop tune. The Dum Dum Girls are definitely a smart choice for fans of such acts as the Ravonettes and Cults.
