Recently I asked readers to chirp in on the subject of crickets -- did they have them or didn't they.

The outcome? It's all a matter of location.

DEAR JOAN: There is a lot of chirping going on in my yard in West San Jose. It sounds the same as it does every summer.

Pat Ellis

San Jose

DEAR JOAN: I recently noticed the lack of cricket sounds also. I live in the Alum Rock area and have forever -- 36 years -- enjoyed the chirping of crickets. I thought it might be that they came later in summer but now I think they are just missing.

I'm anxious to hear if others are missing their cheerful sounds.

DEAR JOAN: We hadn't noticed crickets earlier this summer, but a few weeks ago -- late June to July -- we started to hear very loud chirping every night.

I mentioned to my husband that one cricket must be a granddaddy cricket because the chirp was so loud.

Cathy Moran

DEAR JOAN: We live in the Santa Cruz mountain range and I've noticed a dearth of crickets this summer. I was just commenting on that a few days ago to my husband. Some summers, we hear what seems like millions of them and they can be deafening, but this summer, I have heard only one or two lone crickets chirping.

It's very quiet up here, so I could count them easily. The mountain flora and fauna is very cyclic in nature.

DEAR JOAN: I hear the crickets loud and clear. We live in Turtle Creek, right across from the pond, so there is water nearby. For us, it takes a very warm night like we've been having to hear them.

Concord

DEAR JOAN: It seems to me that we have more and louder crickets in our front yard this year than previous years. They have been chirping for over a month now.

We don't water our lawn and haven't done so for a couple of years. However, a new neighbor put in a lawn with a sprinkling system last year.

Arden Pierce

Palo Alto

DEAR JOAN: I haven't been hearing my very favorite night-time sound either.

I've loved crickets at night ever since I can remember. I keep hoping they'll show up.

Eli P.

Redwood City

DEAR JOAN: I also noticed a distinct lack of evening cricket chirps in my neighborhood. I mentioned this to my wife about a week ago.

J. Hayflick

Palo Alto

DEAR JOAN: We have a lot of crickets. I love their sound. To me it is one of the sounds of summer.

Carol Barrilleaux

Concord

DEAR JOAN: There were plenty of crickets this weekend in our yard in Willow Glen.

Martin B.

San Jose

DEAR READERS: Thanks for all of the input. I think the drought is having an impact on the crickets, perhaps driving them to places were water is more available.
