Knights of the Spam table
We're always delighted by the antics of San Jose's Psycho Donuts crew. We don't always want to try what they come up with, mind you, but we think you'll agree: Spam doughnuts are an act of demented genius.
The Spam Wellington -- a savory doughnut with a spam and mushroom duxelles; hold the sugary glaze -- is a collaboration with City Lights Theater Company, which is doing Monty Python's "Spamalot" in San Jose through Aug. 31. The doughnuts, should you choose to indulge, are available at both the Campbell and San Jose shops. It's probably best if you sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," or at least say "Ni!" when you order that pastry. Find "Spamalot" tickets at http://cltc.org; find doughnut details at www.psycho-donuts.com.
Top pizzeria in America
Chances are, you've read plenty about pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani. The 11-time world pizza champion pizza thrower just broke the Guinness World Record for most pizzas thrown -- 263, if you're keeping score -- and he has a cookbook, "The Pizza Bible," coming out from Ten Speed Press this fall. Now comes news that Forbes magazine food critic Larry Olmsted just anointed Gemignani's San Francisco restaurant, Tony's Pizza Napoletana, the best pizzeria in the nation.
Yep, we know. Now everyone else does, too, and we will never get a table.
Comic-Con is always such a spectacle -- the costumes, the fanboys (and girls), the quirky panels and sneak peeks. We revel in the details -- and the acute sense of deprivation over what we missed. Turns out what we missed last week included a "Bates Motel" party co-hosted by Patron XO, Playboy and A&E -- a creepy shindig that included a taxidermy lounge, tequila-infused ice cream sandwiches, photo booths and Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore sightings.
Well, we missed the party but we can still sip the cocktails, since the Patron folks were kind enough to share the how-tos for The Norma: (2 ounces Patron Silver, 4 ounces ginger beer and ½ ounce fresh lime juice over ice) and The Norman (pictured). We could have sworn he was underage. Also, fictional.
We know that.
Anyway, drink a Norman and toast the show with 1½ ounces Patron Reposado, 4 ounces Squirt or grapefruit soda and a pinch of salt over ice.
