Stanford junior Nicole Gibbs, who recently defended her NCAA singles titles and helped the Cardinal win the 2013 team championship, received the Honda Sports Award for tennis for the second year in a row, the Collegiate Women's Sports Awards announced Tuesday.
Gibbs is among 12 finalists for the Honda Cup, given to the top overall women's college athlete. The award is scheduled to be announced June 24.
Gibbs, who plans to turn professional instead of continuing her college career, won all six of her post-season matches in straight sets and ended the year on a 14-match winning streak. She is the second Stanford tennis player to win back-to-back NCAA singles title, following Amber Liu in 2003-04.
