SAN LEANDRO -- California Highway Patrol officers detained a man at the San Leandro BART station they say fled the scene of a multi-vehicle accident that closed three lanes of Interstate 880 Saturday night.

The four-vehicle crash occurred around 10:02 p.m. near the High Street exit in Oakland, shutting down three northbound lanes for about 45 minutes, according to CHP officials.

BART police said the unidentified man left the scene of the accident, headed to the Fruitvale station and boarded a train. The train was ordered stopped at the San Leandro station, where the man was found and, according to CHP, admitted his involvement in the wreck.

The California Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident.
