SANTA CLARA -- Coach Jim Harbaugh said second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been "savant-like" in his grasping of the game plan for the 49ers playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.
On Wednesday, Harbaugh raved some more about how well Kaepernick is handling himself as he prepares for his first playoff game, Saturday night at Candlestick Park.
"It's been extremely good," Harbaugh said Wednesday. "He's progressing very well, he's very on it. The focus has been very good."
Packers coach Mike McCarthy has been impressed with what he has seen of Kaepernick while breaking down tape of the 49ers the past few days.
Alex Smith, of course, was the quarterback for the 49ers in their season-opening victory over the Packers in Green Bay. Harbaugh switched to Kaepernick after nine games.
"Oh, absolutely," McCarthy said, when asked if Kaepernick looks poised. "We've been very impressed with what he's done on film. He's a strong athlete, can do everything, from the pocket, out of the pocket. He's put together a very nice stretch."
Count Packers cornerback Tramon Williams as another one that is awed by the way Kaepernick has played so far this season.
"No doubt about it," Williams said. "He's shown a lot, just for stepping in when he did. Some of the throws that he makes, some of the reads that he makes, he's kind of before his time you could say right now. He's doing an excellent job for his team."
