Frank Schleck kept the yellow jersey in the Tour de France on Tuesday, with riders pushing themselves through the Alps as the race left Italy and returned to France.
Cyril Dessel won the 16th stage, completing the 98-mile trip from Cuneo to Jausiers in 4 hours, 31 minutes, 27 seconds.
Schleck refrained from attacking during the mountain climbs, finishing 1 minute, 28 seconds behind Dessel. Bernhard Kohl remained second overall, seven seconds behind.
American Christian Vande Velde lost more than 21/2 minutes, dropping from fifth to sixth — 3:15 behind.
"I just hit a tight corner and fell," Vande Velde said.
Track and field
Asafa Powell capitalized on Usain Bolt's weak start and edged the world-record holder by one-hundredth of a second in the 100 meters at the DN Galan in Stockholm, Sweden. Powell was timed in 9.88 seconds. Bolt set the world record of 9.72 in New York on May 31, breaking Powell's mark of 9.74. Also, Dayron Robles missed his world 110 hurdles record by just 0.04 seconds, winning in 12.91.

Serena Williams' injured left knee has knocked her out of another tournament. After practicing, Williams said she knew she couldn't play in the East West Bank Classic in Carson. UCLA junior tailback Christian Ramirez won't play this season because he didn't meet NCAA eligibility requirements. He can count 2008 as a redshirt season.

The Sharks signed goalies Tyson Sexsmith and Timo Pielmeier to three-year NHL entry-level contracts. Both were 2007 NHL Entry Draft choices. The team also re-signed minor league wings Riley Armstrong and Mike Morris to one-year deals.

The D.C. United-Houston Dynamo match at RFK Stadium was postponed because of a power outage. The game was rescheduled for tonight in Washington.

Lisa McCloskey shot an 8-under 63 at the Hartford Golf Club (Conn.) to earn medalist honors at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship with an 8-under 134 total. Candace Parker had 21 points and DeLisha Milton-Jones added 19 as visiting Los Angeles held on for an 84-81 win over Detroit. The game got ugly in the final seconds as a collision between Parker and Detroit's Plenette Pierson turned into a shoving match that saw players and coaches leave the bench. Punches also were thrown, while Shock assistant Rick Mahorn appeared to shove Lisa Leslie at one point. Parker, Milton-Jones, Pierson and Mahorn were ejected, and Detroit's Cheryl Ford injured her knee while trying to restrain Pierson. Her status is unknown.
Boxing
Joe Calzaghe postponed his Sept. 20 fight against Roy Jones Jr. in New York because of a sprained wrist. The bout is expected to be rescheduled for later in the year.
