Hornets remain undefeated The Alameda High girls golf team improved its West Alameda County Conference record to 10-0 with a 226-329 win over Arroyo on Oct. 4. The Hornets' Melissa Yao was the medalist with a score of four-over 40 at Skywest Golf Course-Hayward. Other Hornets scorers were Kenness Cheung (44), Elizabeth Wong (44), Andrea Leung (46) and Monique Torres (52).
Dragons defeat Trojans The Bishop O'Dowd High girls tennis team swept the singles matches on its way to a 5-2 win over Castro Valley on Oct. 4. Jenna DeTurk, Yasmine McCroden and Kristina Lorch won the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles in straight sets. Jenny Coyne edged Janelle Breedlove 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) in the No. 3 singles match.
Moore, Panthers run past Cougars The St. Mary's High girls cross country team used a 1-2 finish by Spencer Moore and Chloe Jenkins to help defeat Albany 21-33 in a Tri-County Athletic League race at Cesar Chavez Park-Berkeley on Oct. 4. St. Mary's improved to 6-0 in TCAL meets, while Albany fell to 5-1. Moore won the 2.97 mile race in 17 minutes, 49.8 seconds, followed by Jenkins (18:44.9) in second and Albany's Annabel Driussi in third (18:51.2). St. Mary's swept Albany 15-50 in the boys race, with Patrick Mariolle winning in 16:17.
On deck Castro Valley at Bishop O'Dowd, football, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. -- It will be quite a battle between the Trojans' offense (which averages 32.2 points per game) and the Dragons' defense (which has allowed a total of seven points the past two games) in this WACC-Foothill battle. Encinal at Berkeley, football, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. -- Both teams will be trying to rev up their offenses -- Berkeley scored seven points on Oct. 5 in a one-point win, and Encinal was shut out on Oct. 5 by Bishop O'Dowd. St. Mary's vs. Salesian at Laney College, football, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m. -- The Panthers will attempt to win their fourth game in the last five, but the 6-1 Pride will be challenging.
Stars of the week Phoebe Grunt, St. Joseph Notre Dame girls volleyball -- Grunt produced 26 kills, five blocks and five aces in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-27, 20-25, 15-13 loss to St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Oct. 5. Melissa Yao, Alameda girls golf -- Yao was the medalist in two straight WACC matches for the Hornets. She shot a two-over 37 on the Jack Clark course at Chuck Corica Golf Complex to lead the Hornets to a 209-267 victory over Bishop O'Dowd on Oct. 2. She also posted a score of four-over 40 at Skywest Golf Course in a 226-329 win over Arroyo on Oct. 4. Brianna Karsseboom, Bishop O'Dowd girls volleyball -- Karsseboom slammed 22 kills and also had 12 digs and two aces in a 25-11, 15-25, 25-13, 25-11 defeat of Castro Valley on Oct. 4. She also had eight kills, six digs and two aces in a 25-3, 25-15, 25-14 win over Encinal on Oct. 2. Marshon Ardoin, El Cerrito football -- Ardoin rushed for 86 yards on only four carries, including touchdowns of 1- and 73-yards, in the Gauchos' 59-6 victory over Berean Christian on Oct. 5. Akil Bordelon, Berkeley football -- Bordelon rushed for a game-high 77 yards on 13 carries, and he also had three interceptions defensively in the Yellowjackets' 7-6 victory over Hayward on Oct 5. Kyle Dalton, Piedmont football -- Dalton rushed for a team-high 105 yards on 15 carries and scored on an 8-yard run in the Highlanders' 21-16 loss to San Lorenzo on Oct. 5. Kevin Flemer, St. Mary's football -- Flemer completed 18 of his 35 passes for 376 yards and five touchdowns in the Panthers' 35-28 win over Valley Christian-Dublin on Oct. 6.
