Teachers join science instruction program
A group of Alameda elementary school teachers are taking part in "BaySci," a Lawrence Hall of Science program that aims to help them with long-range planning for science instruction, according to district officials.
Along with helping teachers prepare students in kindergarten through fifth-grade for middle and high school science, the program allows teachers to join a network of educators who can share advice on what works best in the classroom.
More than 10 Alameda teachers joined the program during the summer. Teachers in Santa Clara, Petaluma, Palo Alto, Oakland, Novato and Newark are also taking part.
According to Alameda school district officials, research over the past three years has shown that school districts taking part in the BaySci program have experienced an increase in the mean of their fifth-grade scores on the science portion of the California Standards Test.
Kiwanis to host candidate forums
The Alameda Kiwanis Club is inviting the public to attend its noontime forums for candidates running for school board, Assembly District 18 and the Alameda Hospital board in the November election.
School board candidates will speak Wednesday, while Assembly and the hospital board will debate at the Oct. 24 forum.
Each forum will take place at the Elk's Lodge, Rathskellar Room, 2255 Santa Clara Ave.
A no-host lunch for $18 will be available at 11:30 a.m. and each program will begin at noon. Presentations will conclude at 1:30 p.m.

City seeks applications for transportation panel
The City Council is soliciting applications from residents who would like to serve on the Alameda County Transportation Commission Citizens Advisory Committee. The appointee will serve a two-year term.
The committee meets the third Thursday of the month, five times per year, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The committee reviews local transportation needs and issues and serves as the liaison between the Alameda County Transportation Commission and the public and local businesses on the implementation of Measure B programs and projects.
Application forms may be obtained from and filed with the City Clerk, City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave.

Deadline for applying is Oct. 25.
Voters can request mail ballot till Oct. 30
Voters may request a vote-by-mail ballot at any time from now until Oct. 30 for the Nov. 6, 2012, General Election by completing the application on the back of their sample ballot, by sending a written request to the Registrar of Voters or by completing the online vote-by-mail application at www.acgov.org/rov.
All requests for vote-by-mail ballots must be in writing and include the voter's signature. Law precludes the Registrar of Voters from issuing a ballot based on a telephone request.
Requests may be mailed to the following address: Alameda County Registrar of Voters, 225 Fallon St., Room G-1, Oakland, CA 94612.
The Registrar of Voters must receive all written requests for vote-by-mail ballots no later than Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Voted ballots must be returned to the Registrar of Voters or any polling place within Alameda County no later than the close of polls on Election Day. Postmarks are not accepted.
