HAYWARD -- The Growing Room, of Livermore, beat out nine other groups to win the 50th Hayward Battle of the Bands, held Saturday at Chabot College.

Zephyr, of Lathrop, took second, and Gypsy Flight, of San Ramon, placed third in the competition, which may be the longest continuously running Battle of the Bands.

The Rob Sesma Band, of Fremont, was chosen by master of ceremonies Mick Flaire for the Flairey Award. More than 900 people attended the event hosted by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD).

Mike Maine, of HARD, was given the Roxanna Salinas Memorial Award for his outstanding effort coordinating the competition. Doris Marciel received a plaque for her contributions to the Battle during its early years, and Simonette Mirande was recognized for her work with the event for the past 30 years.
