MARTINEZ -- A man was taken into custody Friday afternoon after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a chase and crashing into a light pole, authorities said.
Officers arrested the man shortly after he fled his vehicle following the collision with a pole just off the Alhambra Avenue off-ramp.
Authorities had attempted to stop the vehicle on eastbound Highway 4 near the Cummings Skyway. But the vehicle did not slow and officers deployed a spike strip. The car ran over the spike strip and kept going, exiting the freeway in Martinez, CHP Sgt. Joe Johnson said.
A female passenger suffered minor injuries. She went to the hospital and was released.
Officers determined the male driver was under the influence of drugs and arrested him for driving without a license and failure to yield.
