OAKLAND -- Workers employed at the Oakland International Airport will pay just $2 -- a $4 discount -- to ride the new BART tram service to the airport, the BART board decided Thursday.
The fare for other riders will be $6.
The new people mover system is expected to begin service in the fall, carrying passengers between the BART Coliseum station and the airport.
There are about 6,000 badged airport employees, including workers at stores, shops and restaurants and Port of Oakland employees who work there, according to a BART report. The Port oversees the airport.
Airport employees commuting in the new tram will be eligible to apply for a smart transit card programmed to give the discounts.
The tram service will replace AirBart shuttle buses, which charge $2 for a trip to the airport.
