CBS announced Billy Packer is out after 27 years as the network's lead analyst. Including his earlier years at NBC, Packer had done every Final Four since 1975. "This decision was made with myself and CBS over a year ago," Packer said. "Their timing to announce it is their business." Clark Kellogg, a game and studio analyst for CBS for 16 years, will be the man next to Jim Nantz on the 2009 Final Four broadcasts. Packer, 68, also will end his long run as an analyst for Raycom, a regional network that covers the ACC.

    Tickets for all Cal home games became available starting Today at 8:30 a.m. via www.CalBears.com. While supplies last, single-game tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Single-game ticket purchases will be limited to no more than 10 tickets per game, except for the Big Game against Stanford (limited to two tickets each).     The struggling Earthquakes revamped their frontline by signing proven goal scorers Darren Huckerby of England and Scott Sealy of the Kansas City Wizards. According to MediaNews, the expansion club also plans to announce it has acquired Brazilian midfielder Francisco Lima and possibly another striker. With 11 goals, the Quakes (3-9-4) are on pace to set a league season record for fewest goals. The team waived midfielder Joe Vide. The Quakes play the Honduras Olympic team tonight at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. The Quakes resume MLS action Saturday at Toronto.

    Motor sports

    Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman will quit Penske Racing at the end of the season, capping a nine-year run with Roger Penske, who gave Newman his start in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series. A replacement in the No. 12 Dodge will be announced soon. Newman, 30, didn't say where he planned to race next season but the newly formed Stewart-Haas Racing, in which two-time champion Tony Stewart has a 50 percent stake, is seeking a second driver for next year.

    NHL

    The Sharks re-signed restricted free agent center Marcel Goc to a one-year contract. Goc had five goals and eight assists in 51 games last season. The Sharks also re-signed forwards Tom Cavanagh and Brad Staubitz to one-year deals.

  • Ted Nolan's return to NHL coaching ended after only two years when he split with the New York Islanders over "philosophical differences" with general manager Garth Snow. After getting the Islanders into the playoffs in 2007, Nolan guided the club to a 35-38-9 finish last season.

  • Dallas rewarded coach Dave Tippett for a trip to the Western Conference finals by adding two years to his deal, keeping him under contract through the 2010-11 season.

    Track and field

    Javelin thrower Breaux Greer was added to the U.S. Olympic team. Greer, an eight-time national champion, didn't qualify at the recent Olympic trials, but USA Track & Field cited a rule that allows for "the selection of an injured athlete ... as long as another athlete is not displaced from the team." Greer hurt his shoulder while winning a bronze medal at last year's world championships.
