ORINDA -- Team Movember went the distance in the annual Red Bull Flugtag amateur flying competition Saturday at McCovey Cove in San Francisco.

The five-man team, named after an annual prostate and testicular cancer awareness event held each November, for which men are encouraged to grow mustaches, launched a homemade glider off a 30-foot platform and flew 54 feet before plunging into the cold waters of the bay.

It was enough to win them first place in the competition that drew 32 teams.

"The craft didn't nosedive too much," said the glider's pilot, Orinda resident William Hinkamp. "The water was cold. It takes your breath away."

Team members Morgan Oliver-Allen of Alamo, Brian Wilcox of Oakland, Paul Nash, an Australian who lives in San Francisco, and Greg Papierniak of San Francisco launched the glider and then jumped from the platform into the bay.

The win earned the team a free day of sky diving with the Red Bull Air Force, a stunt flying team sponsored by the energy drink maker.
