UNION CITY -- A $7 million federal grant will go toward a Union City organization to aid its Head Start and Early Head Start programs in southern Alameda County, said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Pleasanton.

Child, Family & Community Services, which provides education and family support services to qualified low-income families, was awarded the grant by the Department of Health and Human Services.

"I congratulate Child, Family & Community Services for receiving this federal funding, a recognition of the important services they provide to children," Swalwell said.

Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of young children from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development. The program saw a 5.27 percent cut in funding from the across-the-board sequester budget reductions earlier this year.
